Top 100 companies in India prefer which degree for a job, and how to get a job?

Top 100 companies in India prefer which degree for a job

According to the government, India’s unemployment rate is 3.2%. You must think 3.2% is very good. I mean, in such a big country, a 3.2% unemployment rate. I think it is very great. But if you want to know the unemployment rate among Indian graduates, then you will go into a deeper search, and you will see it is 13%, which is about four times higher. This is quite strange. Those who have not completed school, have not given board exams, and have never attended college have an unemployment rate of almost 0%. But those who have graduated face an unemployment rate of about 13%. Quite unbelievable, isn’t it?

This means that the more degrees you acquire in this country, the more likely you are to be unemployed. You think this must be crazy, but it’s actually the reality. Your parents, your school, your teachers—everyone told you that a degree means security, a degree means a job. Going to college is your parents’ choice. The preferred path. Everybody has to do this. You did it. But the result is now in front of you.

The question arises in every aspiring mind: which degree is most likely to get you a job in such a competitive environment? The detailed analysis of this question is given below.

Computer Science Degree and Job Problem

According to surveys, in the year 2000, there was a wave of computer science. Many people started attaining computer science or IT engineering degrees. The demands in the IT industry were so high that millions of people were hired. They had great careers. Many people went abroad. They even got H1 visas. Thousands of things happened. But in 2026, if you are getting an engineering degree, the truth is that the gap between supply and demand is very much so. Currently, in the country, more engineers are being produced than companies need. Naturally, therefore, not every engineer will get a job here.

Secondly, these engineers do not even want to work for the salary that people are getting commonly. After four years of hard work, dedication, life, and money investment, only three to four lakh rupees per annum is not very appealing. This does not explain why people with engineering degrees earn ₹3 lakh. It is better to be unemployed than to have a job.

The reasoning behind this is straightforward. If you begin your career with a salary of ₹3.5 lakh per annum, your future growth is largely tied to that starting point. Annual increments typically range between 7% and 10%. A 10% increment on ₹3.5 lakh amounts to only ₹35,000 annually. Considering rising living expenses and the qualifications required to obtain the degree, such growth often feels insignificant.

MBA Degree & Job Problem

Now, the degree that has become so common is the MBA. There was a time when getting an MBA was actually a good idea, which taught about business. It teaches you about business administration. Gives more efficiency in marketing, finance, about HR, supply chain, logistics, education, etc. But now it’s too late. An MBA has become common in people’s eyes.

Now, MBA students are everywhere. And they are not getting a satisfactory salary. They are getting what they deserve. So, what is happening? Most MBA students are getting very low salaries. They are applying for a salesman job. They are doing some sales in the name of sales & marketing. Sometimes the MBA graduates are selling something on the street. They are going from door-to-door selling. They set up a stall in a mall and sell credit cards or insurance policies.

You think that after completing your MBA, you will wear a suit, work in an air-conditioned office, and earn a good salary. But here, I speak. The story is different at IMS. The average salary there is still ₹25 to ₹35 lakhs, which is incredible and very respectable. But after the first 10 best MBA schools, the decline is much steeper. Tier-2 MBA colleges have come down from ₹10 to ₹15 lakhs. Tier-3 MBA colleges are stuck at ₹6 to ₹10 lakhs.

Now, about our online MBA world. There are some good online MBA programs. And there is no qualification required for this online MBA program. No exam required. Anyone with money and time can enter. It has truly created an online MBA warehouse environment. I am a believer in online. Some online MBA education is very good, and I truly feel that the highest quality education can be found at an affordable price.

Something Education Institute does online MBA education for its own profit. They are using some really bad programs where nothing new is being taught, such as the diluted course they are giving. When it comes to placement, they leave you disappointed. Employers are saying it has become so common.

General BA, B.Com., B.Sc. Degree and Jobs in the field

Now, a hundred thousand people get general bachelor’s degrees, B.Com., B.Sc., and B.A. These degrees do not teach anything new. They teach an old course, which is probably 5, 10, 15, or 20 years old. These courses are not needed for any industrial application. No professional qualifications or skills are taught. Attendance is pathetic. Teachers are not inspiring. Students are not eager to attend the classes. Students think college life is for reels, stories, trips, enjoyment, etc. No constructive discussions are happening anywhere. No projects are being worked on. No good internships. There is a mentality among employers that if someone has a normal degree, then they are not worthy enough for a job. There are definitely some better colleges. Such as SRCC, Xavier’s, and Presidency. The courses are high quality, and if someone goes there, then some credibility is established. But when you go down the list of the top 10 colleges in this country, then the game is almost over.

Unless you do something dramatically different, which we will talk about later. There was a time when a BBA was really one of them. People used to say that BBA is good because the Bachelor of Business Administration is a good stepping stone to an MBA. Some colleges offered a BBA. They were also good. But now every college is offering a BBA. So again, the same problem is happening. So, BBA has now become like B.Com.

MBBS Degree and Jobs Field

An MBBS in the medical field is a good course. If you have done MBBS.  If you pursue an ENT doctor. There is also not a good employment possibility. Because currently India has more dentists than it needs. However, there is not much need for a dentist in rural areas because people don’t care for their dental hygiene. There is more supply in urban areas. So, dentists are also doing other low-paying medical jobs.

In the field of pharmacy, the same problem can be seen. Most pharmacy graduates become salesmen of pharma companies. Yes, they know about pharma, but at the end of the day, they are just selling. So, not much happens there either. AYUSH was a big effort that people would learn about Ayurveda, yoga, Unani, and alternative medicine. They would go a little further in that. The companies are not doing very special things for these types of jobs. If you want to start your own practice, it will take a long time. Lots of experience, lots of reputation, customers for years. Suppose you open your own Ayurvedic center or homeopathic center, but that also is not very easy. So where do you start? How do you get that experience if there is no job?

Teaching Jobs and Problems

Likewise, B.Ed. has been a favorite degree for women for years. It is the degree that parents choose for their daughters to pursue in order to become teachers. They keep saying that because they think that teaching jobs are easy, flexible, and don’t need much hard work. They go in the morning and come back by 2:00 pm. Then you can also take care of your family. There will be time for everyone, etc.

Now, for a teacher, it has also changed. Now it is not only about teaching but also about office work. Those who are full-time teachers are also doing hard work. In fact, they are working more. They leave at 7:00 am and arrive at 6:00 pm because they have to attend classes in school, but then they also have to check the exam papers. They have to plan schoolwork and so on. And the salary is not that attractive, certainly not in private institutions. If you become a government school teacher, the salary is quite good.

Mass Media Communication and Their Job Problems

Similarly, mass media communication is another sector that has fallen behind. AI has come and destroyed everything. I remember it was one of the best professions in earlier times. People of those times were pursuing these professions with enthusiasm. They had great speaking skills with clear English and were good at Hindi or their regional language also. They use language with so much confidence. But now it is not as inspiring as it used to be, and it is really sad because there are no jobs left for people with only theoretical knowledge.

Hotel Management Jobs

Hotel management is another sector facing challenges. Many positions require employees to work between 12 and 16 hours daily, often with relatively slow career progression.

Nevertheless, individuals who remain committed to the industry for 15–20 years can eventually rise to senior leadership positions, including general manager roles at prestigious hotels.

The Growth of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the employment landscape. Employers increasingly ask why they should hire multiple employees when a single professional equipped with AI tools can accomplish the work of several people.

Job Problem Cause and Solution

Today’s education system is so old that people are not competent. So, if you just sit in a classroom and learn everything and understand, or think that you will do well in real life, then you will be so far from reality that you will be surprised on the first day of your job. What do you really have to do, and what have you studied for three or four years in a classroom? The main problem is oversupply.

So, wherever we see that there is money to be made in this profession, colleges spring up. Parents start sending their children. Thousands, lakhs, and millions of students start enrolling. And the next thing you see is that the supply has increased. And the demand has dropped. And suddenly, we have a shortage of workforce who have the required skills. And finally, I think the biggest thing is that there is a skill-degree mismatch. Companies hire for skills, not for the degree you have. Companies want your ability and skills for an efficient solution. But now that you know, there are almost the same degrees. An employer cannot identify who is good, who is not, who has skills, and who does not. So, now the focus is not on degrees, but on real skills. Employers or companies asking that you have done an MBA or M.Com, have you passed 12th or 6th? That does not matter. If you do a job or use your skills. Then you will be selected; otherwise, you will not.

 How to Develop Valuable Skills

So, what does a college student need to do? First of all, you have to focus on building skills, not degrees. What do you understand by that? You have to understand what skills are required in the industry you want to go into. That may be Communication skills. Coding skills, sales skills, data skills, or marketing skills. No matter what, you need to focus on that skill. Neither a course nor an exam paper.

Students should work on a project or internship and learn practically. Otherwise, you won’t learn just by watching YouTube videos, attending lectures, or taking tests. So, which skill will get you qualified and into the winning category in your industry, and what do you need to succeed? It’s important to understand what is required. You should master those skills.

How do you achieve success in skills?

Number one, for the first step, you need to start collecting data from the resources available to you, such as YouTube videos. Then you go to some paid courses. But finally, you should do an internship to develop those skills.

Number two, well, you have to show that you actually learned that skill and applied it. And the best way to do that is an internship. An internship is the best way to apply what you have learned. Because it really shows whether you have learned something and are able to apply it or not. It doesn’t matter whether you get a salary or a stipend in that internship. As long as you are learning, please give as much time as possible.

Number Three is certification. Certification is needed to demonstrate that you know the job requirements for the industry. If you are a computer science engineer but you don’t know how to do coding, don’t know what cloud architecture is, don’t know how DevOps works, and have never taken a product live until now. You’re a computer science engineer, and you don’t know how a UI works and have no idea what a product management tool is. So, what kind of a computer science engineer are you? And this applies to every field. You need to get certifications so that you understand what the industry needs. Because certifications are mostly industry-relevant.

Certification courses you can do in 1 month, 2 months, a few weeks, or a few months, but they are very helpful in the long run. So, let’s say if you want to be a cloud architect, then you can get AWS certified, Google Cloud certified, and Azure certified. And it will tell you what their infrastructure is like, what their product is like, and what should be done. What do you have to learn? So that on the first day, you know where to go and what to do. And if you combine it with internships, then you can also gain experience. If you focus on skills, then you can also get to know that, specifically, what skills are you most interested in and would like to master?

Final Thoughts

The traditional system that promised employment through degrees alone is no longer functioning as it once did. To build a successful career today, individuals must move beyond that outdated model and create their own path.

The modern job market values people who can contribute from their first day, individuals who have practical experience, and those who demonstrate a willingness to learn continuously.

If you spend your college years developing skills, completing internships, earning certifications, and gaining practical experience, you will gain a significant advantage.
